New consumer research shows that smoothies have been one of the fastest growing food/drink markets over the past five years. Sales have increased by more than 80 percent with annual sales reaching more than $2 billion. This includes made-to-order smoothies, from businesses like Jamba Juice and Freshens.
There are a couple of reasons for the popularity of smoothies, but the biggest one is that they are perceived as being healthy while still tasting good. Most smoothies involve a blend of milk, yogurt, sorbet and fruits, often with additional vitamins and supplements mixed in. Although smoothies may be high in calories, it is a better alternative to chips and cookies. Furthermore, smoothies are convenient. It appeals to many college students as an "on-the-go meal," which is one thing that has helped smoothies become a fixture in people's busy lives. Some smoothie companies are even adding new flavors to its menus, like the addition of green tea. I am not so sure about a green tea smoothing; I enjoy the traditional smoothie, which includes berries and yogurt.
Although the smoothies at local shops are delicious, they can be pricey and high in calories. The good part is that making a smoothie is easy. So pull out that blender and start blending.
