Millions of Americans are trying to keep their New Year’s resolution to lose a couple of pounds by improving what they eat and increasing physical activity. Fortunately,
On Jan. 31, Burger King Holdings Inc., the world’s second-largest burger company, proposed a plan to eliminate trans fat in all of its food chains by next year. Fast-food chains such as Wendy's International Inc, Yum Brands Inc.'s KFC and Taco Bell are also cutting trans fats from their menus and providing healthy alternatives. These healthy alternatives taste just as good and have half the fat as the regular items on the menu. The yogurt parfait is amazing.
A Harvard University study estimates that trans fat-driven heart disease kills 30,000 people per year. However, nutritionist Marion Nestle has mixed views on the issue. She said that trans fats may help keep arteries healthy, but won't reduce calories or obesity. I disagree with Nestle. This public relations campaign, which is fighting against trans fat, will ultimately help our country reduce obesity and lower the risk of heart attacks. This campaign, which began in 2006, required all nutritional labels to list trans fats on its labels. Today, the trans fat campaign has become so effective, that changes are even taking place worldwide.
